On Saturday, April 28, more than 40 volunteers with the Greater Capital Area Association of REALTORS® (GCAAR) helped two local homeowners make their homes safer and more comfortable. For the third straight year, GCAAR Cares, the community service foundation of the association, worked with Rebuilding Together of Montgomery and Washington, DC to sponsor and work on a house in each jurisdiction. Volunteers performed essential home maintenance tasks at each house, including clearing unwanted debris; cleaning; painting; and fixing and replacing broken fixtures and appliances for the homeowners who were either financially or physically unable to make the repairs themselves.
GCAAR Cares is the association's ongoing community service initiative. Launched in 2005, it provides opportunities for association members to contribute time, energy, and funds to their communities by becoming engaged in unique community and charitable projects.
In addition to working with Rebuilding Together each year, GCAAR Cares sponsored the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon and has worked with such charities as the National Center for Children and Families, Housing and Community Initiatives, the Montgomery Housing Partnership, and the Community Preservation and Development Corporation of DC. Representing more than 11,000 real estate professionals in the greater capital area, GCAAR provides numerous services vital to its members' daily business needs and works with lawmakers to ensure public policy that encourages home ownership.
